The project involved scaffolding and removal of the existing slate
roofing, carpentry repairs, and installation of new slate roof system
set in "J" channels, including new copper flashings.
As the structure projects nearly 300 ft. above Pennsylvania Avenue in
the heart of Washington, DC, inspection and roof replacement was only
facilitated by projecting 14" I-beams through the observation deck 220
ft. above the street. All scaffolding from that level and above, to the
peak of the roof, was supported. It was also critical that catch
platforms and netting be provided to eliminate the possibility of
debris or tools exiting the roof level. As the Old Post Office Tower
building has both retail and offices, crowd control and pedestrian
protection was provided through the use of platforms and strategically
placed signage.
