The Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum was
reroofed by Roofers, Incorporated during an eight month period during
the fall, winter and spring of 1990/1991. The project involved the
total replacement of the 78,000 sq. ft. roof system to the structural
roof deck, including all composition and sheet metal flashings.
Additionally, a new elastomeric membrane waterproofing was applied at
the new roofs and troughs between the skylight units on the entire
skylight court. As roof replacement operations occurred throughout the
entire Museum, demolition operations were scheduled in the early a.m.
to avoid interruption to visitors to the facility. Additional
protection and care was undertaken in areas over Gallery 100 housing
the Spirit of St. Louis, the I-MAX Theater, and the Spacearium.
Roofers, Incorporated maintained working conditions in accordance with
OSHA guidelines, including protecting personnel with safety rails while
incorporating netting to eliminate the possibility of blowing or
falling debris. Extensive signage, pedestrian walkways, and protected
surfaces were incorporated to protect employees, visitors, and services
of the Museum while work was under construction.
